GOLDEN OLDIES - EASTER 2024
The Golden Oldies met for a wonderful time as they reflected on meaning of Easter.
We considered why Christians name the day on which we remember the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ as GOOD Friday. Was it not a dark and dreadful day? An innocent man, God’s own Son, was betrayed, flogged, mocked, nailed to a wooden cross and died.
Yet it is His death that enables us to sing, “My sin, O the bliss of this glorious thought. My sin, not in part, but the whole; Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more. It is well, it is well, with my soul.”
Tea, Easter eggs, hot cross buns and the making of bunny bookmarks were followed by an interesting talk by Alan Beckman, (a passionate, enthusiastic historian) on the reformer Guillaume (William) Farel, a courageous, faithful man who “burned with an extraordinary zeal to advance the gospel.” It was said of him: “He turned every stump and stone into a pulpit, every house, street and marketplace into a church… Wherever he went he stirred up the forces of the people and made them take sides for or against the gospel. No one could hear his thunder without trembling; or hear his most fervent prayers without being carried almost up to heaven.” His was the work of the ploughman who was called to hack down the trees, clear away the underbrush, and do the hard work of ploughing; others would come, more gentle than he, and sow the seed. In turn, he was abused, insulted and threatened with death for obeying God's command to go out into all the world and preach the good news of the gospel.
We departed with the challenge of this man’s example and ministry on our hearts.
