CHOSEN

In our retired men's fellowship we are in Mark's gospel and were looking at Jesus' calling his first disciples. We were struck by his authority! Having had little to no contact with Jesus up to this point, and before he had said or done anything to prove himself to them: "At once they left their nets and followed him".

Moreover, in those days a potential disciple would pick his Rabbi - his teacher - not the other way around. Here is the truth about our calling as Christians, we don't choose Jesus, he chooses us! In the words of an old hymn:

“My Lord, I did not choose you,
For that could never be;
This heart would still refuse you,
Had you not chosen me”.

Although this is a humbling truth, it's a comfort, and ultimately where our assurance lies - not that we picked him, that he picked us!
