PLUS SIGN
You may be wondering about the stylised cross - the cross represented as a plus sign - in our branding... for example +CSW! How did it come to be? The stylised cross is reflected in the roof light of our church building. It also happens to be the logo for Pedersen + Lennard who supplied the chairs and tables and so it is stamped into every item of furniture.
This got us thinking about the relationship between the universally used plus sign and the cross, the symbol of Christianity. At its most basic, a plus is an ADD sign… which also speaks of inclusion and growth. It can mean a point of intersection… and of course, is used to mark out a hospital or pharmacy both of which are places of healing and restoration.
So, why have we adopted it? As with the plus sign, the cross has universal appeal. We are called to take the gospel to all the world, because everyone needs to be saved through the cross. The above associations with the plus sign, redefined through the cross on which Jesus died, apply to the church because the “good news” is ultimately about these things.
Therefore, the stylised cross in the context of a Christian church that positively “holds out the word of life” is not only appropriate, but causes us to reflect deeply on our calling to be “in the world... not of the world… for the sake of the world”. It fits who are... and hope to be!
Yours in Christ
