BROKEN
We are currently preaching through the Proverbs. There are many proverbs which highlight the importance of the inner life - our mental and emotional state of well being. One such proverb states: "The human spirit can endure in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear?" (Prov. 18:14). So, your body can be broken “in sickness” and your “spirit” can sustain you... but if your “spirit” is broken you've got nothing to sustain you! The proverb emphasizes the priority of managing and caring for the inner life because how you deal with life's circumstances from the "inside" is what matters.
The Apostle Paul is on point when he prays for the Ephesians, not that they will be able to handle their difficult circumstances, instead: "I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being…” (Eph. 3:16). If your life is all broken but your spirit is strong, then you will be able to face the brokenness with strength!
