BIBLE TRANSLATIONS

I’m sometimes asked: “What bible should I use?” In other words, what English translation would you recommend?

We are spoilt for choice with many good English translations available and still others in the making. Personally, I have no hesitation in recommending the New International Version (NIV, 2011). In choosing an English translation there are 3 main considerations. Firstly, is it faithful? Every translation from the original Hebrew and Greek texts requires interpretation. The bible we choose for everyday use, should be accurate, reliable and give us a good sense of the meaning of the original.

Secondly, is it readable? A literal word for word rendering of the original would be unreadable in English. Many of the older English translations, and some newer ones, are faithful but “wooden” and difficult to read - especially out loud and in public.

And lastly, is it gender inclusive - meaning is it inclusive of women? For example, a literal translation of “brothers…” in the original is rendered “brothers and sisters…” In most instances, both men and women are being addressed unless the context deems otherwise. This is an important consideration today when many view the church as patriarchal or a “boys club” - which we are neither!

The NIV, 2011 is a good balance of these three considerations. It is therefore our bible of choice from which to read and preach at CCSW.
