REMEMBER!
We were thinking together how often the Scriptures call us to “remember”… and it’s often! Why is this? We are called to trust God in the present and for the future based on the past: his grace shown to us in Christ for salvation as well as his goodness in supplying our everyday needs. We live in fear, caught up in the present crisis… the troubles of today because we forget the "track record" of God’s past grace and goodness to us. Hence the continual call to remember.
To highlight the importance of remembering I sometimes provocatively say to people: Did you know that the New Testament never says that God loves us. To which they respond: “Yes it does… of course God loves us!” Well yes, but that’s not what it says. Instead, the New Testament always says that God loved you (past tense) pointing you back to the cross, to remember the great demonstration of his love which is the guarantee that he loves you today and forevermore.
Yours in Christ,
Gavin
